In a collaborative initiative, Cyvl partnered with England-Thims & Miller (ETM) to conduct a detailed transportation infrastructure assessment of roadways in Neptune Beach, Florida. This project leveraged Cyvl’s mobile LiDAR and high-resolution imagery sensor technology to capture just under 100,000 pavement distress details and over 3,000 right-of-way assets, providing an unparalleled level of insight into the city's infrastructure.

Challenge

Neptune Beach faced challenges in maintaining an accurate inventory of right-of-way assets and assessing pavement conditions efficiently. Without comprehensive data, the city struggled to prioritize repairs, leading to reactive maintenance, higher costs, and potential safety risks. A more precise, data-driven approach was needed to improve infrastructure management and resource allocation.

Solution

To address these challenges, Cyvl and ETM deployed cutting-edge sensor technology to collect and analyze critical transportation infrastructure data.

Key Aspects of the Project:

  • Comprehensive ROW Asset Inventory: Captured data on above-ground assets, including fire hydrants, manhole covers, water valves/backflows, and MUTCD signs.
  • Advanced Pavement Distress Detection: Identified and categorized various pavement issues such as alligator cracking, rutting, and potholes.
  • Efficient Mobile LiDAR Deployment: Equipped survey vehicles with Cyvl’s high-resolution sensors to collect precise geospatial data across 45 miles of roadways.
  • Data-Driven Maintenance Strategy: Delivered actionable insights, which enabled informed budgeting and resource allocation for long-term infrastructure sustainability.

Implementation

To efficiently collect and analyze roadway data, Cyvl and ETM deployed a vehicle equipped with Cyvl’s advanced LiDAR and high-resolution imaging sensors across 45 miles of Neptune Beach roadways. This technology captured detailed images and geospatial data on pavement conditions and right-of-way assets.

The collected data was then processed and analyzed to create a comprehensive digital inventory, enabling the city to make informed infrastructure decisions.

Results

1. Enhanced Infrastructure Visibility:

  • Provided Neptune Beach with a high-accuracy digital record of all right-of-way assets and pavement conditions, improving decision-making and planning.

2. Optimized Maintenance Planning:

  • Enabled the city to prioritize repairs based on real-world data, reducing costs and preventing premature infrastructure deterioration.

3. Increased Operational Efficiency:

  • Allowed for automated asset tracking and more effective allocation of resources, reducing the manual effort required for inspections.

4. Improved Road Safety & Longevity:

  • Identified and addressed pavement distress issues proactively, leading to safer roadways and an extended infrastructure lifespan.

Impact

Cyvl’s AI-driven approach transformed Neptune Beach’s infrastructure management by providing unprecedented data clarity for asset tracking and maintenance planning.

With a comprehensive digital inventory and actionable insights, the city can now optimize resources, enhance public safety, and extend the lifespan of its roadways, setting a new standard for data-driven infrastructure management.

The insights gained from the detailed data analysis enabled Neptune Beach to optimize its maintenance operations, improving road safety and extending the lifespan of its roadways.
